The protection of operators, the prevention of accidents, and the minimization of environmental contamination are aspects increasingly valued by both farmers and policymakers, as well as by society in general. In this context, Closed Transfer Systems (CTS) have been emerging as one of the most promising solutions for making slurry preparation operations safer and more efficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the framework of the European project <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorynetpest.eu\/\">AdvisoryNetPEST<\/a>, This technology has been identified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3UxyEILFK2Q\">New Approach<\/a> with the potential to contribute to the European goal of reducing the use and risk of pesticides (RURP), while simultaneously promoting better working conditions for agricultural operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Closed Transfer System is a safety device that allows the transfer and mixing of plant protection products in the sprayer through a closed circuit, preventing the operator from coming into direct contact with the product during one of the most critical phases of the application: the preparation of the spray solution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the currently available solutions stands out the EasyConnect\u00ae system, composed of two main elements: a standardized cap installed on the product packaging and a coupler mounted on the sprayer. When connected, these components allow the product to be transferred safely, significantly reducing the risks of spills, splashes, and exposure of the operator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The technology was designed to be compatible with packaging of different capacities that use the IS 63 standard and does not require significant structural modifications to existing application equipment. Additionally, it integrates automatic rinsing features for packaging, contributing to safer waste management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Benefits for farmers and operators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main advantage of Closed Transfer Systems lies in the protection of users. Studies and practical demonstrations indicate that this technology can reduce operator exposure during the mixing and filling phases of sprayers by more than 90% compared to traditional open methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the safety benefits, CTSs have other relevant advantages:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<li>Reduction of the risk of strokes and accidental contaminations;<\/li>\n\t<li>Faster filling and rinsing of the sprayers;<\/li>\n\t<li>Simplification of handling operations;<\/li>\n\t<li>Improved operator comfort;<\/li>\n\t<li>Reduction of product waste;<\/li>\n\t<li>Ease of installation and use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Farmers who use this technology often report that operations become cleaner, faster, and more comfortable, while simultaneously improving compliance with the increasingly demanding safety and sustainability requirements of the sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A technology prepared for widespread adoption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another aspect that reinforces the potential of Closed Transfer Systems is their high replication capacity. The technology can be integrated into different cultural systems and sprayers types and already has the support of several companies in the plant protection industry, who are gradually adapting their packaging to be compatible with these systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The experiences carried out in Portugal and in other European countries demonstrate that adoption is relatively simple, especially in medium- and large-scale agricultural operations. Nevertheless, initial investment can constitute a barrier for some smaller-scale farmers, which is why different experts consider that financing mechanisms could accelerate its dissemination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is also important to mention that, despite its advantages, the technology has some limitations. Currently, it is not compatible with granulated formulations that can be dispersed in water, although these pose a lower risk of exposure when compared with liquid formulations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Security as a factor of sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a context where agricultural sustainability is often associated with reducing environmental impacts, it is important not to forget the human dimension of sustainability. Protecting the health of agricultural operators is a fundamental element to ensure more resilient and responsible production systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The CTS stands out precisely for generating a direct impact on the safety and working conditions of users, without compromising the effectiveness of phytosanitary operations.
