In about 30 years, the value generated by Annual Work Unit (UTA) more than doubled, evidencing a clear relationship: less labor force, More value. Mechanization and technological modernization, irrigation, productive specialization, and a more professional business management have allowed us to maintain and even strengthen the Gross Added Value (VAB) of the sector, despite the sharp decline in the total volume of work.

At the same time, an reorganization of agricultural employment is observed. After decades of decline, the number of people employed has stabilized and recorded a slight growth since 2015, This reflects greater formalization, an increase in paid labor, and the expansion of more structured entrepreneurial enterprises. However, microenterprises continue to predominate, although the relative weight of medium-sized and large enterprises is growing, especially in sectors oriented towards export and international markets.

This evolution has a very uneven territorial expression. Regions such as Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes they continue to present a high proportion of agricultural employment, while in many territories of the North and Central Fragmented family agriculture predominates. Municipalities such as Odemira stand out for their high dependence on agricultural labor, illustrating the coexistence of distinct, intensive, entrepreneurial, and family production models within the same sector.

One of the most striking features of this transformation is the growing dependence on foreign workers. In relative terms, agriculture has become one of the sectors with the highest proportion of immigrant labor, accounting for more than 40% of the total in 2023, A very significant increase compared to 2014. Although the absolute number of foreign workers is lower than in sectors such as construction or catering, their importance is structural: without this workforce, many farms would not be able to ensure the continuity of agricultural campaigns.

Agriculture is also distinguished by the extra-community origin of its foreign workforce, with a strong predominance of workers from Asia, notably from Nepal., India and Bangladesh. This pattern reflects the more seasonal, demanding, and intensive nature of agricultural work, in contrast to other sectors of the economy, where European and Lusophone migration flows predominate.

Despite the productive modernization, the sector faces a critical challenge in terms of qualifications. Agriculture continues to have the lowest levels of formal schooling in the Portuguese economy, with more than 80% of national workers possessing only basic education. Paradoxically, foreign workers demonstrate, on average, higher levels of education than their national counterparts, constituting an important pool of skills, but difficult to retain in the face of competition from other sectors.

The analysis of working conditions and agricultural productivity reveals that Portuguese agriculture is in an advanced phase of structural reconfiguration, in which the creation of value has become less dependent on the quantity of work and more on its quality, organization, and specialization.

The progressive replacement of the family workforce, the valorization of qualifications, mechanization, and the differentiation between sectors simultaneously explain the increase in productivity and the new pressures on the agricultural labor market.

One of the central axes of this transformation is the sharp decline in the number of family workers, who have lost more than half their number in recent decades. The aging of producers, the weak generational renewal, and the growing technical complexity have made the traditional family model structurally insufficient. In parallel, the rise of wage labor, which in 2023 represented about 40% of the total volume of agricultural work, reflecting the transition to more entrepreneurial models, with formal links, greater operational planning and the use of permanent, occasional and external labor.

The professionalization of work was also reflected in the remuneration conditions.

Agricultural wages have increased by more than 50% in the last decade, growing at a rate higher than that of the national economy, although starting from a historically low base.

This evolution reflects a growing pressure on the labor factor, associated with the shortage of labor and the need to attract more skilled profiles. The average gain increases clearly with the level of qualification, evidencing a growing differentiation in income based on technical, management, and specialized operational skills.

In parallel, Portuguese agriculture has recorded a significant jump in labor productivity. In the last three decades, productivity has more than doubled, reflecting a structural dissociation between employment and the creation of value. Despite the sustained reduction in the volume of work measured in UTA, The sector managed to maintain and, above all, after 2015, increase the Gross Added Value.

This pattern confirms that agriculture today grows with less labor, supported by mechanization, technological modernization, specialization of the fields, and more efficient management models.

However, these gains are heterogeneous, revealing relevant sectoral asymmetries.

Industries such as modern olive cultivation, intensive fruit production, and some livestock production exhibit higher levels of productivity, associated with greater scale and technological integration. In contrast, sectors more dependent on manual labor maintain lower productivity levels. The future of agricultural labor will be marked by less direct labor, greater technological intensity, and increasing organizational complexity.

Automation will continue to expand, but the true critical factor will lie in the ability to integrate technology, specialized services, and qualified talent. The farmer of the future will increasingly be a systems, data, and partnership manager, embedded in an interdependent ecosystem where efficiency, operational intelligence, and strategic decision-making will determine the creation of value.

The competitiveness of the sector will therefore depend not only on technological adoption, but also on the ability to align competencies, business models, and training policies with this new structural reality.

Portuguese agriculture produces more with less labor, requiring technology, qualification and new management models.

["post-18128","artigo","type-artigo","status-publish","hentry
13913
[13913
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
