What it means to scale up an agricultural solution, from the field to the system

Scaling toolbox: the contribution of the ClieNFarms project

As the agricultural sector evolves and faces new adaptation needs, the demand for effective solutions and methodologies becomes increasingly relevant. At the heart of this process are farmers, who are seeking more sustainable practices to improve the efficiency and resilience of their farms.

However, although technical solutions can have an impact on the scale of the exploitation, their transformative potential is limited unless they are disseminated and adapted to the scale of the system. To accelerate the sector’s transition and increase the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, it is necessary to circulate knowledge, methodologies, and innovation across the entire value chain. System of Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation (Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS)).

In this context, the concept of scaling, or transformation at scale, emerges as an essential approach to drive lasting change. A process scaling requires the mobilization of the right stakeholders and can follow one or more complementary paths.

  • Scaling-up: growth of an initiative in the same context, increasing its scope of application.

  • Scaling-out: replication of a solution in comparable systems or contexts, with limited adaptation needs.

  • Scaling-deep: systemic transformation, requiring a detailed analysis of the components of the system and its behavior when altered.

Reconhecendo a urgência desta transformação e a necessidade de envolvimento multiator, o projeto ClieNFarms, financiado pelo programa europeu Green Deal of the Research Framework Programme e Horizon Innovation 2020 (H2020) (H2020), created the Scaling Toolbox. This digital tool brings together resources dedicated to transforming the agro-food system, with the aim of supporting the climate neutrality of agricultural farms by 2030. 2050.

The tool integrates technical, methodological and strategic resources to support different professionals in the agro-food sector. In addition to a catalog of technical solutions, it allows searching for resources by region, production system, type of user and stage of the scaling process.

  • Behavioral changes and adoption of new practices.

  • Multi-actor approaches and stakeholder mobilization.

  • Identification, training and motivation of professionals in the agro-food sector.

  • Risk management and the definition of short- and long-term strategies.

  • Financing, public policies and business models.

  • Impact monitoring, including greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration.

To facilitate use, the Scaling Toolbox It organizes the information by user profile, including farmers, advisory technicians, industry representatives, policy makers, investors, and financial institutions. The tool also considers the user’s stage in the scaling process, adapting the research to their needs.

  • Understanding the context and boundaries of the system.

  • Specify the objectives of the transformation, taking into account the perspectives of farmers, the value chain and regional actors.

  • Analyzing barriers and levers of systemic transformation.

  • Mobilizing a group of professionals relevant to the process.

  • Create a process Iterative to accompany, adjust, and consolidate the transformation.

A Scaling Toolbox It will be in constant adaptation and development, integrating recent and innovative tools, methodologies and solutions. This evolution is essential in an agricultural sector marked by constant change and the need to respond simultaneously to productive, climatic and economic challenges.

The available resources include materials developed by the ClieNFarms project, of which the CONSULT It is a partner, leading communication and dissemination, as well as other content considered useful to support the progressive transition of agricultural farms to more resilient and climate-neutral models.
