COCOREADO: rebalancing the position of the farmer as a key actor in food supply chains

COCOREADO is a project under Horizon 2020 that aims to bring balance to the food chain, giving more relevance to farmers. Traditionally the role of the farmer in the value chain has been defined as “price taker”, being dependent on upstream and downstream operators.

We will focus on opportunities for farmers in rural areas to co-create innovative solutions that overcome current barriers for farmers and respond to consumer needs, while improving conditions for sustainable public procurement of local and seasonal food.

A training programme of COCOREADO ambassadors will be established, which will involve the active participation of young people, something unique in European projects in this area. In this way, the connection between young people and farmers will allow the co-creation of an innovative and sustainable environment, which will make it possible to overcome obstacles, while ensuring a response to the needs and expectations of consumers.

CONSULAI, as the only Portuguese partner, intends to highlight the Portuguese reality in the European context. Indeed, in Portugal, the agricultural sector is characterised as ageing, where farmers have little bargaining power, and with weak adherence to sustainable development of short supply chains.

It is in this context that COCOREADO, ensuring a fair balance between the various sectors of the agri-food chain, aims to contribute to a fair and sustainable future for farmers across Europe.
